After about four weeks work with very long hours, working to a tight budget and deadline, I finally finished this monster Hound! The body was made from carved plastazote over plastic piping for the bone structure with fake fur on top. I painted the fur and combed it into the direction I wanted. I designed and made the beast with a rucksack inside the chest so a performer can go up inside the chest, clip themselves in and then operate the head and jaw and give the body some movement too. Look here for Behind The Scenes pictures! [link] and an early video test [link] This part of the performance all happens in total darkness with only torchlight to illuminate it...it all makes for a very scarey moment! It then has to get 'shot' and so the whole costume/puppet has to fall over! Then the operator escapes from view whilst Holmes and Watson examine the unaturally large hound. It's been made for the Illyria Theatre company [link] for their tour of the classic Sherlock Holmes story 'Hound of the Baskervilles.' The play is only being performed in outdoor venues around Britain.

Hound by *richardj is uh...different. I like different, even if its a six foot tall irritable canine made to (successfully) creep the bejeebus out of people. (Suggested by ~dananew1 and Featured by `zeruch)

let burn the flames and through the fire shall souls be cleansed, through suffering we know of joy. for without sadness how can one comprehend happiness? there would be no basis of comaparison and thus all emotions would be the same. a bland existance.
What fur did you use out of interest?
While on the subject, have you ever done flocking electrostaticly? i've never had reason to do it, but I'd like to have a play
Ha ha! Poor creature ain't interested in the bone unless it's got a whole body attatched!
As for the fur...well, as it was a tight budget (as ever) I was using all sorts of leftovers from here and there plus some new bought fur fabric. It wasn't totally ideal but for theatre you'll never know. Shh...don't tell!
Flocking? No...I never have. I remember watching it being done at Henson's...it's quite a skilled operation. They were using an airbrush (without paint in it) to blow the fur particles into the direction they wanted it to go in...especially for around the face of an animal etc.,
Wish I could see that performance live- it must really be something to behold! And I'm a big SH fan- Jeremy Bret and company were the best televised incarnation of those characters yet!
